I would say it's easier to go from a R1 to other places than from an LAC to other places. But perhaps you should not assume moving from R1 to LAC is easy. If you are good, then it's hard to convince people at LAC that you have real interests. If you don't get tenure at an average R1 university, we are not that interested in collecting rejects.
What do the demand siders think of the following advice: go to an R1 first because it is a lot easier to go from a R1 to a LAC than vice-versa?
