Economist on "Some truthful facts about The University of Chicago"

When I was thinking about grad school back in 1980, it came down to U of C vs. MIT. It was clear then that a top student would get through Chicago just fine. Their policy was to give more people a chance. If you thought you were better than your undergrad record, you could go to Chicago and prove it. Of course, on average people aren't better than their records and they are overoptimistic, so they flunked out. It was great to have one school that would give a chance to the person who had undergrad flaws, though. I decided on MIT because of the coordination problem: that was where the best students were going at the time. Of course, that can change quickly.

Chicago surely should put more weight on hiring senior faculty known for their advising prowess. Conditional on the current bad PR, they should shrink their class and not admit any of the risky students that they admitted in days or yore. Sadly, "giving people a chance" is not so wise. Likewise, giving people a chance and admitting them to drive in NASCAR races or fight in mixed martial arts is not wise either. Paternalism sometimes is win-win. This is one case. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Hasn't Stanford been top? I guess you'd have to count GSB too, but I am fine with that for the purpose of these rankings

Solid top5 faculty, solid top10 PhD program
but it's not top5 to be a PhD student

Let's end it and go back to work.

Amir must have literally f**ed lots of female students in his career. At least this is definitely how it looks from the outside. I remember him sitting with all the females around him like a sultan. I am surprised this hasn't come out earlier.

Shame shame shame on UCSD. If you are not in his gang, don't be bothered to submit your paper to MS. He will desk reject it. His own papers are frauds.

I don't think the OP cares about $$$$/INR that much. Ahmedabad is a second or Third tier city according to western standards. So is Bangalore. Anyone who states otherwise is an Indian who couldn't adjust abroad or failed.

what do you mean by half decent? Millions of people, include high income, live in these cities. Delhi is bad, but you can use all protective gears. Ahmeddabad and Banglore are still better than many cities in the world, and things are only improving.
IIM will give you a salary of about $1500 per month plus a house. The maid will cost you like $100 per month for all the cooking, the driver will take around $150 for full time. IIMs also have good elementary/high schools nearby, mostly either free or at discounted fee. Health care cost would be negligible for you, if you work at IIM/IITs. All included you will still be saving like $8-10k a year. This is in addition to your retirement benefits, which are quite generous.
You will walk/bilke to your office. Students will respect you, unlike USA. You will get couple of seminar invitations every 2 months or so. Pvt sector will respect you. RAs are cheap/free. IIMs also pay for 2 foreign travel a year for seminar. You can make some real contribution to Indian policy/businesses, unlike dying in your office in USA LRM in the middle of nowhere.
Food is good. Train rides are cheaper. Holidays are cheaper.

IIM Bangalore in that case. You can actually also try for universities like Ashoka etc which would have a low teaching load. MISB bocconi also comes to mind but don't know if they hire for the Indian market.
If you want to just look at IIMs then the ranking would be-
Bangalore
Ahmedabad
Calcutta.
On the basis of location this might change to-
Ahmedabad
I would put ISB before Bangalore
Bangalore
Rest.

Thank you. Big cities such as Bangalore and Ahmedabad have become extremely polluted. Even Ashoka is next to Delhi. There are no good schools in second tier cities...Honestly, I do not see a half decent option for an US academic in India, purely from a quality of life perspective.

the only thing I miss about India is food. Rest everything is better here in the west. The retard above mentioned that students will respect you in India. The word he was looking for was fear. Respect is forced in India and not earned. 1500$ in India is not much. There are people earning crores in places like Delhi. Almost everyone drives a BMW 5 series in south Delhi yet live in pigeon holes and have no place to park their cars. The air quality is s**t. The food is amazing but that's about it. Bars are filled with vulgar losers from Punjab or new riches studying abroad at LRMs like Melbourne etc and all of them have the cash. The law is in their hands. Women will come to you for your money or your degree. Bangalore has gone from bad to worse too.

I studied at IIMA. Most profs there hadn't published or taught a class in years. Based on what I heard from the FPMs, the most respected ones ( by industry) made more than a couple of crores a year in consulting fees.

Yeah, the only reason students attend classes at IIMA is because of the dreaded I grade.

Incomplete. Some sadistic profs would hand it out if class attendance was not satisfactory. You can graduate with one F, but not with a pending I .

Sounds really nasty. American profs are sadists too but they don't show it. European origin profs are the best in my experience.

As a consultant, you can charge whatever the market will bear. The guys I heard the numbers about were politically very well connected.
